Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an all-only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott went to her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she enrolled in Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while studying secondary education. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. She was unable to fulfill this dream when, after completing three years of study while working as a teacher assistant, she left college. She started her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works during live poetry readings. She ultimately joined to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she got collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to experience the performing arts during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
